Brandon Jenkins to enter draft
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Brandon Jenkins said the past three months rehabbing a broken foot have provided ample time to think about his future, and Monday he informed Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher he was ready to enter the NFL draft.
The senior defensive end could have accepted a medical redshirt after he suffered a Lisfranc injury in the first quarter of FSU's opening game this season, allowing him to return for 2013. But after turning down an opportunity to enter the draft a year ago, Jenkins decided it's time to test the waters in the NFL.
"I think it's time," Jenkins said. "It's been great, and I love FSU. I bleed garnet and gold. It was a tough decision, but I feel like my time has been good but I will enter the draft."
Jenkins was widely considered one of the top defensive ends in the nation entering the season, but the injury certainly will have an impact on his status in the draft. But after weeks spent using a scooter to get around campus, Jenkins said his foot has healed enough that he's confident he'll be healthy enough to participate in the NFL combine and various individual workouts in advance of the draft.
"I wouldn't prefer getting hurt, but I prefer it happening the first game than the last game," Jenkins said. "It's a lot of time to heal and get back right before all those things."
Jenkins will finish his Florida State career with 22.5 career sacks, and Fisher said he believes there's enough film of Jenkins' productivity that NFL general managers will see past the injury. Regardless of whether the injury costs Jenkins in the draft, he said he doesn't regret returning to school for the 2012 season.
"You could never look back and regret things," Jenkins said. "You can't do things looking at the negatives. You have to have a positive mind."
