Nebraska-Oklahoma to resume series
NORMAN, Okla. -- The Battle of the Big Reds is coming back.
Nebraska will visit Norman on Sept. 18, 2021, and the Sooners will take the trip to Lincoln on Sept. 17, 2022.
"Classic rivalries like Oklahoma-Nebraska are part of college football's historic fabric," Sooners athletic director Joe Castiglione said in a statement Thursday. "The ability to rekindle a fabled series between two tradition-rich programs and two extremely loyal and passionate fan bases was very important to both universities."
The 2021 meeting will take place on the 50th anniversary of the 1971 "Game of the Century," which the Cornhuskers won, 35-31.
"Our rivalry with Oklahoma has been one of the great traditional matchups in the history of college football," Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne said. "The games between the two schools were generally to decide a conference championship, and many times helped determine the national champion. Those matchups were always played with great intensity on the field, but with a great deal of respect from both sides and among the fan bases."
That classic, which featured the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams, helped elevate Oklahoma-Nebraska into one of the preeminent rivalries in college football. The matchup decided the Big Eight championship 31 times in 36 seasons.
But the two schools were placed in different divisions when they joined the Big 12 in 1996, and met only twice every four years. The rivalry began to wane; its swan song came in 2010, when Oklahoma overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat the Cornhuskers 23-20 in the Big 12 championship game. Nebraska joined the Big Ten the following season.
Also Thursday, Nebraska and Southern Miss officials announced that the Sept. 7, 2013, game between the schools has been moved from Hattiesburg, Miss., to Lincoln, Neb.
