Mike Bloomgren to lead offense
Stanford has promoted offensive line coach and running game coordinator Mike Bloomgren to the position of offensive coordinator.
Bloomgren's actual title is the Andrew Luck Director of Offense. In May, Stanford announced its offensive coordinator position was endowed due to a generous gift from an anonymous donor in honor of Luck, the former Cardinal quarterback.
Bloomgren will continue to coach the interior offensive line. He replaces Pep Hamilton, who left earlier this month to join Luck and the Indianapolis Colts as the offensive coordinator.
"I'm very excited about elevating Mike Bloomgren," Stanford head coach David Shaw said in a release. "He was the only choice. We didn't interview anybody else, and we didn't want to interview anyone else. Mike has done an outstanding job with our offensive line and run game, though he's more than an offensive line coach. He understands our offense and how diverse we need to be to attack defenses. We hope to continue the success we've had on offense, while also improving in many areas, and Mike is the right guy to lead us to our goals."
With the shuffling on the staff, running backs coach Mike Sanford will take over as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. He'll also continue as Stanford's recruiting coordinator. Former Stanford quarterback Tavita Pritchard moves over from defensive assistant to coach the running backs.
"The last two years, Mike Sanford has done a great job with our running backs," Shaw said. "Now I am able to move him back to his natural position in the passing game. He played quarterback and assisted us while we coached the quarterbacks in 2007-08. He has worked with our quarterbacks ... in ballhandling and protections. Now he will do a great job working with me to continue developing our passing game."
While Bloomgren oversaw the offensive line, four of Stanford's five starting O-linemen earned all-league honors -- including All-American David Yankey, who won the Pac-12's Morris Trophy for top offensive lineman.
Bloomgren joined the Stanford staff in 2011 after spending four seasons with the New York Jets.
