FIU coach sorry; no charges filed
MIAMI -- FIU football coach Ron Turner is apologizing for the conduct of some players who used a public outdoor shower after a beach workout Friday and disrobed in public.
The incident took place on Crandon Park Beach in Key Biscayne, Fla., about 20 miles east of FIU's main campus. Miami-Dade police say they were called to investigate reports that a group of players were unclothed in view of other beachgoers.
No charges were filed, and police say none are expected.
"Following the workout, some of our athletes went to rinse off at a designated public shower area and a few of them made a poor decision and changed their clothes in public," Turner said in a statement. "I want to apologize to the community and anyone who was at the beach this morning for this unfortunate incident. We are committed to helping our student-athletes grow as gentlemen while preparing them for their careers. We are looking into this incident and, if appropriate, will take disciplinary action."
The team was at the beach for a cookout commemorating the end of preseason conditioning. The school's investigation will continue.
