Nittany Lions' Franklin dismisses OC Donovan

After failing to crack the top 100 nationally in total offense over the past two seasons, John Donovan was fired as offensive coordinator at Penn State.

Penn State coach James Franklin has fired offensive coordinator John Donovan. The firing itself isn't a surprise, but the timing is a bit of a shock. Franklin didn't really hint at this move during a postgame press conference Saturday.

Just when things couldn't possibly get worse for the Nittany Lions, Koa Farmer fumbles the kickoff, Michigan State recovers and Jack Allen punches it in on a 9-yard run on the Spartans' first play. Penn State trails 55-16 on ESPN.


Spartans defense gets in on the scoring

Malik McDowell returned a Christian Hackenberg interception 13 yards for a TD with 9:56 left in the fourth quarter to put Michigan State up 47-16 against Penn State on ESPN.

LJ Scott hit the edge for a 6-yard TD run with 11:18 left in the fourth quarter to give Michigan State a 41-16 lead over Penn State on ESPN.


Cook tosses third TD pass

There was some question whether Connor Cook would even play today. Well, he's playing and playing well. This 6-yard pass was his 3rd TD of the game, giving Michigan State a 34-10 lead late in the third quarter on ESPN.


Franklin: Need to eliminate mistakes

James Franklin said of his Penn State offense, which racked up 268 yards in the first half but was limited to 10 points: "We're moving the ball. We gotta eliminate the costly mistakes."

Michigan State is one half away from a date with Iowa in the Big Ten title game. Penn State gave Ohio State fans some hope with a TD late in the half to cut the lead to 20-10 at intermission. But the Nittany Lions have shown no ability to score in bursts all season, so a comeback here would still require some magic.

Chris Godwin got separation from his defender and hauled in the Christian Hackenberg pass -- a pass that gave Hackenberg the school record for career TD throws.


Spartans add to lead with fumble return

Demetrious Cox picked up this Penn State fumble and ran it back all the way for a touchdown, giving Michigan State a 20-3 lead over Penn State on ESPN.


Holmes shakes off defender for TD

Gerald Holmes would not be denied on this 6-yard TD run, giving No. 5 Michigan State a 13-3 lead over Penn State in the second quarter on ESPN.
