Pitt RB James Conner, battling cancer, threw out the first pitch Sunday at the Pirates' Opening Day game against St. Louis. Conner, the 2014 ACC Player of the Year, received a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd at PNC Park. Conner intends to return and play this fall for the Panthers.

Departed Tyler Boyd accounted for nearly half of Pitt's receptions, leaving a major void at receiver. Coach Pat Narduzzi said WR Jester Weah stepped up in camp and is catching the ball better. Defensively, ACC sacks per game leader Ejuan Price (0.89) returns for a sixth year, and Narduzzi said they're working on his consistency. "If he keeps his motor going and never turns the engine off then he's going to be unbelievable."

Jared Shanker ESPN Staff Writer

Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi on RB James Conner, who is working out with the team while undergoing cancer treatment: "You wouldn't know he's going through the battle he's going through." The belief is Conner will play in 2016.
