Source: Baylor gives interim coach Grobe $1.25M

Jim Grobe's reported $1.25 million salary as Baylor interim coach ranks as the eighth-highest in the Big 12, ahead of Iowa State's Matt Campbell and Kansas' David Beaty.

At some point, Baylor coach Jim Grobe will start focusing on football again, but said this week it's a delicate balance. "Certainly I want to get on football as much as possible, but I think we have to be very sensitive to what's happened in the past -- especially the victims -- and try to make sure going forward that we don't waste these teaching opportunities and we learn from past mistakes."

Big 12 board chair David Boren's statement on Baylor: "The details provided today are a necessary step in helping the entire membership gain a better understanding of the past actions and how the university plans to deal with all the issues identified in the Pepper Hamilton findings. We were assured of the university's commitment to keep the conference appraised going forward. My Board colleagues and I sincerely appreciate the leadership of interim president Garland during this period, and support his efforts for absolute compliance. We were pleased by the commitment made by their regent's chairman, Mr. Murff, to support appropriate institutional control going forward, and to assure full Title IX compliance."

The Big 12 (really 10) announced it's going to explore adding as many as four teams through expansion. The league's board of directors has authorized commissioner Bob Bowlsby to solicit interest from potential candidates. Among the schools that might be considered potential candidates: Boise State, BYU, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Connecticut, Houston, Memphis, UCF and USF. Bowlsby said the Big 12 board "saw the path forward clearly and has taken steps. We need to look at it logistically and put a plan together."

A more low-key afternoon session of interviews at Big 12 media days for Baylor's Jim Grobe, who says he remains impressed with the Bears' incoming freshmen. "So much has been made of the decommitments," Grobe said, "but this is a really, really talented class."
