1 Big Thing: Baylor operated above the law (1:59)

Max Olson ESPN Staff Writer

I'm told Baylor is not expected to make an announcement regarding its interim coaching situation tonight. Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett is reportedly in talks to take on that role.

Three members of Baylor's 2016 top-20 recruiting class that signed in February said they have not been officially notified one way or the other by the school if they will be released from their letters-of-intent. The signees asked not to be identified at this point said they have already been reaching out to other schools to gauge their interest. Four Power 5 recruiters told me Thursday they expect most of the Bears' 2016 class to end up looking at other schools with Art Briles' firing.

Baylor loses No. 9 TE recruit after Briles discipline

Kedrick James, the nation's ninth-ranked tight end, announced Thursday that he is backing away from his longtime commitment to Baylor following the school's dismissal of head coach Art Briles.

Kellen Mond, the nation's No. 2 dual-threat quarterback and Baylor's top commitment, said he's going to have an in-depth conversation with his parents about his status. Even though Mond has been committed to Baylor since last June, he has been looking at other schools like Ohio State and Auburn. "I'm not sure yet how it will affect my recruitment," said Mond, who attends Bradenton (Florida) IMG Academy but is originally from San Antonio. "I definitely committed there because of Art Briles, but I won't know or do anything until I talk to my parents more in depth."

Baylor posted signs declaring "Real Men Respect Women" and "Be The Most Physical Team" at the entrance to its practice field this spring. Those signs are noticeably absent today.

Heather Dinich ESPN Staff Writer

The details that have emerged surrounding Baylor sicken me, but I'm encouraged by the women who were brave enough to come forward and force not only Baylor to acknowledge what happened, but every campus in the country. The firing of Art Briles made the statement that these women and the safety of others are more important than winning -- something that should go without saying, but every single coach and athletic administrator needs to hear. Don't let this happen again.

Spoke with a Baylor football player. He said he's heard defensive coordinator Phil Bennett will be the interim coach, but players have not been officially informed yet. They're expected to have a team meeting next week - when Baylor players return to campus - to discuss the plan moving forward.

How does Baylor football proceed after Briles? (2:15)

Max Olson ESPN Staff Writer

Several Baylor assistant coaches have been seen leaving the football facility, including Art Briles' son, offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. All have declined to comment to reporters.

Adam Rittenberg ESPN Staff Writer

I really hope this change is seen through at Baylor. From university release: "A centralized hub of student conduct information will provide a level of "early warning" for those students who are at risk or who may place others at risk. The university will ensure the accountability of employees by making clear the violation of reporting obligations could be cause for discharge. Additionally, processes will be put in place to ensure all instances of interpersonal violence, regardless of where they originate, will be evaluated under the Title IX office."

Brandon Chatmon ESPN Staff Writer

Baylor is expected to fire Art Briles but the use of "football coaches and staff" in the Findings of Fact report released by the university makes me think there could (or should) be more members of the staff let go.

McMurphy: Baylor report 'pretty troubling' (1:54)

Travis Haney ESPN Staff Writer

This excerpt from Pepper Hamilton's Baylor report strikes at the heart of the overarching story: The upstart program grew too big, too fast - and it became win-at-all-costs. Corners were cut, risks were taken. Eventually, it all caught up with the school and coach Art Briles.

Asked for his thoughts on Art Briles' firing, Baylor ESPN 300 receiver commit Hezekiah Jones of Stafford (Texas) High School said "it's crazy." When asked if he'll decommit, he said "we'll see." Despite his pledge, Jones has continued to be heavily recruited by Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and many others.
