Third time's the charm?

Thursday night marked the third time in the common draft era that a Cal player landed in the top two picks. Jared Goff joins Steve Bartkowski as the only Cal QBs to go No. 1 overall.

Todd McShay ESPN Senior Writer

Jared Goff is more pro-ready right now, but I think Carson Wentz can be as good or better. Wentz has exceptional mental makeup. He's big and mobile. Yes, he only started 23 games at the FCS level, but don't be fooled by low-hanging fruit.

Bio Blast: Jared Goff

The Los Angeles Rams made Goff the first selection of the 2016 draft. Goff left Cal as the record holder in pass yards and pass touchdowns and thrived against the blitz in college.

Kiper scouting report: Jared Goff

Get to know the newest Ram, No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff. Mel Kiper Jr. offers his analysis on the former Cal quarterback's game.

Pocket mobility and vision. Those are two keys to Jared Goff's game. Add in the quick release and the high-level football IQ. There should be an expected transition process with Goff moving into the Rams' pro-style offense, but this club needed a major boost at the position. Run the ball, play defense under Gregg Williams and reduce the stress on Goff as a rookie.

Winners aren't always first

If Jared Goff is selected first overall by the Los Angeles Rams, he will have the lowest win percentage of any QB selected with the top pick in the common draft era. Fellow Golden Bear Steve Bartkowski currently holds the mark.

The Cleveland Golden Bears?

The Browns would be a good home for Cal's entire draft class. Just the fact that Jared Goff is a member of the class is enough to tantalize Cleveland, but there are other prizes among the Golden Bears entering this year's draft. If NFL teams could pick CFB teams (Insider)

They weren't kidding -- it's a close call

We knew it was a close call, but we didn't realize it was this close. Cal QB Jared Goff and North Dakota state QB Carson Wentz are nearly identical in each category besides in TD/interception rate.
