Dana Holgersen breaks down his run/pass ratio

West Virginia coach Dana Holgersen chats with Ivan Maisel about their run/pass ratio and how they're working on passing the ball a little bit more, the work they've put in to improve pass protection and how Tyler Orlosky has helped to anchor that offensive line.

Count Dana Holgorsen among the fans of the impending Big 12 championship game. The West Virginia coach is "sick" of playing regular-season games on championship Saturday. "It pisses me off," Holgorsen said. "We miss a week of recruiting, and it's not a championship game. It has not made sense to me." Last year, seven-win West Virginia lost at five-win Kansas State on Dec. 5. "Who [cares] about that? The only way it matters is if it's a true championship game, the way every other conference is doing it." The Big 12 will join the party in 2017

West Virginia returns only four defensive starters but Dana Holgorsen sees more "NFL guys" on this year's unit than last year's. He lists safeties Dravon Askew-Henry, Jeremy Tyler and Jarrod Harper, linebackers Al-Rasheed Benton and Xavier Preston, and defensive ends Noble Nwachukwu and Christian Brown in that category. "The body types look as good or better than the previous guys," Holgorsen said. Now it's their turn to get out there and turn it loose."

West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen's reaction to the Big 12 moving toward expansion was like a lot of people's. "It's about time," Holgorsen said. "We've been talking about it forever. I'm tired of playing regular-season games on Dec. 3, games that don't mean as much as what everybody else is doing. Let's have a championship game and play it off on the field."

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said new teams could be added to league by 2017. Welcome to the next wave of conference realignment

Mark Schlabach ESPN Senior Writer

The Big 12 (really 10) announced it's going to explore adding as many as four teams through expansion. The league's board of directors has authorized commissioner Bob Bowlsby to solicit interest from potential candidates. Among the schools that might be considered potential candidates: Boise State, BYU, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Connecticut, Houston, Memphis, UCF and USF. Bowlsby said the Big 12 board "saw the path forward clearly and has taken steps. We need to look at it logistically and put a plan together."
