UAB football has been officially "back" since last June. Today is one of the first visible signs of the Blazers' return for fans. More than a year ahead of its first game since the program's reinstatement, Bill Clark's team is holding an open practice on campus. Ten minutes after practice started, there are already several hundred fans here to watch.

UAB students vote to help support football team

An overwhelming majority of UAB students voters favored a self-imposed fee of $25 per semester that will go toward supporting the reinstatement of the football, bowling and rifle teams.

UAB will also reintroduce rifle competition this year and bowling in 2016. Said football coach Bill Clark: "Like our fans, I wanted to light the scoreboard much sooner, but doing it right is more important than doing it fast, and this was our best option. We want a program that is here to stay."

UAB signs first player to restart program

Offensive lineman Tyler Jones, who redshirted at Memphis last season, will join the program that was revived June 1 after being shut down after last season for financial reasons. The school has not said when it will resume playing.
