FSU assistant: Recruit's flip from Florida planned

ESPN 300 recruit Shavar Manuel flipped from Florida to rival Florida State on national signing day Wednesday in a strategic move that an FSU assistant coach said was two weeks in the making.

No Top 6 Class, No National Title

If you haven't had a top-6 recruiting class in the last three years, odds are you wont be capturing the 2016 title. Every national champion going back to Florida in 2006 had a top-6 recruiting class in the three signing periods prior to winning the national title.

SEC bumped out of top spot?

Thanks to Alabama, LSU and Florida, the SEC has dominated the top two recruiting classes in recent years. But judging from how FSU has fared on signing day, that will change this year.

Florida slid down the ESPN class rankings Wednesday after missing out on a few ESPN300 prospects, but the coaching staff believes it already has a head start on 2016 with 12 mid-year enrollees, including eight on offense. Adding ESPN 300 receiver Tyrie Cleveland on signing day also bolstered the offensive haul. If there was one objective, it was to upgrade the offense. Florida seems to have done that.

Manuel flips from Gators to Seminoles

Former Florida commit Shavar Manuel, ESPN's No. 10 DT, commits to Florida State. He's the Seminoles' fourth ESPN 300 defensive linemen commit, second most in FBS (LSU, 6).

Florida coaches got some big news within the last hour. The Gators flipped ESPN 300 receiver Tyrie Cleveland from Houston and held on to ESPN 300 defensive end Antonneous Clayton. Once Cleveland made his announcement, cheers could be heard from the football office. His decision bolsters a huge area of need with Antonio Callaway the only proven receiver back. Within the same timeframe, ESPN 300 DT Shavar Manuel decommitted. There have been questions about whether Manuel had the grades to get into Florida. With that information, Manuel decided to go elsewhere.

One victory on Wednesday morning for Florida: four-star defensive end Jachai Polite signed with the Gators after a late push from USC. Polite visited the Trojans in January, but ultimately stuck with his commitment after building relationships with the Florida staff. Plus, the Gators were able to keep the Daytona Beach prospect in state.

There might not be that many fireworks at Florida today, but that was by design. The Gators have 12 mid-year enrollees already on campus, more than any program in the country. That includes ESPN 300 quarterback Feleipe Franks. Coach Jim McElwain credits his staff for getting so many players here already. The best part for McElwain? They're all going to be ready for spring practice next month.
