HISTORY
Year Opened: 1950 | Field Surface: Artificial Turf
Baylor has been battling on the gridiron since 1899 and for the better part of the first 35 years football was played on campus. Early records do not indicate where the team played prior to the opening of Carroll Field, home of the Bears from 1902 to 1935, interrupted only by a stint from 1926-1929 when they played at the Cotton Palace. In 1936 the team moved off campus for good and into Waco Stadium.
They would remain at Waco Stadium (renamed Municipal Stadium in 1942) through the end of the 1949 season. Baylor Stadium opened as the home of Bears football on Sept. 30, 1950, to a 34-7 victory over Houston.
In a 2006, a record crowd of 51,385 saw the Bears lose to Texas A&M.
Another milestone occurred during a Baylor-Texas A&M game nearly 90 years earlier, when in 1917 the 107th Engineers, a unit of the 32nd Infantry Division stationed at Camp MacArthur in Waco, gave the first live bear to the university. The bear's name was Ted and he made his debut at the Bears-Aggies game that season. Upon getting their World War I orders to move out, the troops left Ted behind for the university's Athletic Department.
TRADITIONS
When at home, the Bears are lead out onto the field by a group of students known as the "Baylor Line." This long-standing tradition holds that a group of students, composed entirely of freshmen, dons gold jerseys with unique nicknames emblazoned on the back. After running around to pump up the crowd, the frosh form an human "tunnel" through which the team runs.
While Baylor football has been a much-loved tradition for more than 120 years, there were three seasons when it was either banned or cancelled. In 1906 the school deemed football too violent a sport, and in the 1943 and 1944 seasons the school didn't field teams due to World War II.
