HISTORY
Year Opened: 1958 | Field Surface: Natural Grass
Sun Devil Stadium opened in 1958 with a capacity of 30,000. It was constructed between two mountain buttes, affording panoramic views. "A" Mountain is one of the landmarks of the ASU campus. The A is painted about 30 times a year, according to the school. Over the course of three renovations capacity at the stadium was raised to more than 71,000 and better sight lines were created.
One of the bigger days in its history was Sept. 21, 1996, when the field was named Frank Kush Field, after the legendary coach, and the Sun Devils shut out top-ranked Nebraska 19-0.
Sun Devil Stadium also has been the home to the Insight Bowl since 2006, was the site of the Fiesta Bowl from 1971 to 2006 and has hosted four national championship games and Super Bowl XXX. The Arizona Cardinals played here in Tempe for 18 seasons.
TRADITIONS
The school's Sun Devil nickname has nothing to do with devils, but rather is a atmospheric condition similar to a "dust devil" caused by a very high level of sunlight. Sparky is the familiar name of the pitchforked mascot. Sparky has been emblazoned on the sides of the Sun Devils' helmets and was widely used as the official logo until the spring of 2011, when the school decided to rebrand Sparky. The university unveiled a trident logo that is more three-dimensional and debuted new uniforms. An updated version of Sparky also is planned, according to the school.
