HOUSTON -- Mike Ojala and Mark Haynes hooked up for the kind of NCAA tournament victories that Rice coach Wayne Graham has made a staple over the years.

The Owls combined strong pitching with timely hitting as they claimed a 5-2 victory over Sam Houston State, stretching their winning streak in regional games to 13 straight dating back to June 6, 2004.

Rice (40-15) pounded out 11 hits in attack, punctuated by three hits from Chad Mozingo. All of the Owls in the starting lineup except for catcher Diego Seastrunk collected at least one hit.

Ojala (5-0) pitched a strong seven-inning effort, scattering seven hits, walking two and striking out four. Haynes pitched the final two to nail down his first save of the season.

Sean Weatherford was the losing pitcher for Sam Houston State (36-23), which lost for the second time in three games against Rice this season.

Rice moves ahead in the winner's bracket in a game at 7 p.m. ET Saturday against Kansas State, which claimed a 16-8 triumph over Xavier earlier in the day. The Bearkats and Musketeers will meet in an elimination game at 3 p.m.
