Rice stays in front of K-State, 3-2 in the third inning

HOUSTON -- Wasn't this supposed to be a dream pitching matchup?

The ballyhooed battle between Rice's Ryan Berry and Kansas State's A.J. Morris hasn't lived up to its hype as Rice leads 3-2 after three innings.

The Owls jumped ahead with two runs in the first inning and added another in the second inning when Steven Sultzbaugh scored on a wild pitch. They have pounded out seven hits in the first three innings against Morris, who has allowed that many hits in only six of his 15 starts this season.

KSU is staying close thanks to a couple of clutch two-out hits that produced both of its runs. Jordan Cruz delivered a two-out single in the second to account for one run and Nick Martini added another two-out RBI single in the third.

Rice was poised for another big inning in the third when Chad Mozingo doubled with one out and advanced to third on Michael Fuda's single. But Morris pitched out of danger by getting Craig Manuel out on a popup and Sultzbaugh to hit an inning-ending groundout.

That was the most determined clutch effort by Morris in the game. We'll see if he can build on it from this point forward.
