HOUSTON -- Rice bunched three straight singles in the fourth inning to claim an early 1-0 lead over Kansas State after four innings in their elimination game in the Houston Regional.

Singles by Diego Seastrunk, Anthony Rendon and Chad Mozingo produced the first run of the game. Mozingo's single scored Seastrunk, who reached on a one-out hit.

The run provided an early cushion for Rice starter Taylor Wall, who has scattered two hits over the first four innings. Rice has produced five hits against KSU starter Todd Vogel.

Wall received the benefit of a couple of key defensive plays in the second inning. One came when Rice center fielder Steven Sultzbaugh made a fine running catch at the warning track to rob Jason King of an extra-base hit in the second.

Sultzbaugh trumped that with another strong catch on the following at-bat at about the same place on the field. He then made a strong throw to nip Justin Bloxum at second base after Bloxum attempted to advance on the play.
