Louisville-Vanderbilt preview

June, 1, 2009
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Vanderbilt is putting the ball in the hands of its ace to start tonight's winner-take-all regional final against Louisville. At least for a little while.

Left-hander Mike Minor, who threw eight innings Friday afternoon in a 5-4 loss to Middle Tennessee, will get the call again tonight for the Commodores. The potential first-round draft pick is expected to go a couple of innings before handing off to the bullpen, unless things go exceedingly well.

Louisville will take the opposite tactic, starting rested freshman Tony Zych. He has started only two games this season, but he was the winning pitcher in the Cardinals' Big East championship game win over Connecticut.

Vanderbilt is seeking its first trip to the super regionals since 2004. The Commodores were the No. 1 national seed in 2007 but couldn't make it out of the regional in Nashville, Tenn. Few would have thought this year's young team would get this far.

The Cardinals need to get the middle of their lineup going, as Rick Bozich wrote in today's Courier-Journal. Chris Dominguez, Phil Wunderlich and Andrew Clark have yet to homer after hitting 50 in the Cards' first 59 games.

Vandy shortstop Brian Harris has two home runs in the regional, more than any other player.

Starting lineups are as follows:

LF Josh Richmond
2B Adam Duvall
1B Andrew Clark
3B Chris Dominguez
DH Phil Wunderlich
RF Ryan Wright
C Jeff Arnold
SS John Dao
CF Drew Haynes

RHP Tony Zych

SS Brian Harris
CF Jonathan White
RF Steven Liddle
1B Curt Casali
DH Aaron Westlake

3B Jason Esposito
2B Riley Reynolds
LF Joe Loftus
