Westlake's homer puts Vandy up 1-0

June, 1, 2009
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A towering home run by Aaron Westlake has given Vanderbilt an early 1-0 advantage in the Louisville Regional final.

Westlake clobbered a 3-2 pitch to straightaway center field to lead off the second inning. There's a slight wind blowing out to left center, and the ball kept on carrying.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt has gotten two scoreless innings out of Mike Minor and he's back out for the third. He's pitching on just two days' rest after going eight innings Friday. Minor doesn't have the best command but is using his off-speed stuff effectively.

The Cardinals also helped Minor with some bad baserunning. Andrew Clark got picked off to end the first inning. Minor escaped the second with a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play, as slow-footed designated hitter Phil Wunderlich was easily caught trying to steal third on a 3-2 count.

By the way, boxing legend Muhammad Ali is in the stands for the second time this weekend. Who knew The Greatest was such a college baseball fan?
