Ramirez, Leake power ASU to 7-4 win

June, 7, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State wins Game 1 of the best-of-three Tempe Super Regional, 7-4 over Clemson, with six of the Sun Devils' runs scoring after the Tigers recorded two outs.

That's got to have the Clemson faithful pulling the hair out of their collective noggin'.

Mike Leake got the win and improved to 16-1 on the year -- he leads the nation in wins -- and recorded his 40th career victory. The junior right-hander tied Eddie Bane for the most wins at ASU by a three-year pitcher. He went eight innings and gave up eight hits and three earned runs with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Every Sun Devil got a hit, and five players supplied RBIs. The star, however, was Carlos Ramirez, who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. His two-run single to left in the bottom of the eighth gave Arizona State some breathing room.

The Sun Devils will try to close out the series Sunday.
