Valdes HR cuts LSU lead to 6-5

June, 13, 2009
LSU carried a 6-4 lead over Virginia into the seventh, but Franco Valdes' solo shot cut the Cavaliers' deficit in half. Keith Werman followed with a single -- his fourth hit of the game, setting a new career high -- which was enough to end LSU pitcher Austin Ross' night.

LSU sent Chad Jones to the mound to get the Tigers out of the jam. Jones, who doubles as a free safety for the Tigers' football team, obliged, getting Phil Gosselin to pop out to keep the Tigers in front.

On a side note, there are 24,904 in attendance for the Cavaliers-Tigers tonight at Rosenblatt Stadium, matching a record for the night session of the opening day of the College World Series. A 2005 game between Nebraska and Arizona State drew the same attendance.
