Not to be outdone by Southern Miss' exploits in the top half of the eighth inning, Texas returned the drama in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead, 6-5.

With the bases loaded and one out, Brandon Loy drew three consecutive balls from Golden Eagles pitcher Collin Cargill. With the count at 3-1, Loy drew the fourth ball to score Travis Tucker for the tying run.

Cargill couldn't find the plate on the next at-bat against Cameron Rupp, as he fell behind 2-0, prompting Southern Miss coach Corky Palmer to send Josh Fields to the mound.

Fields battled back to strike out Rupp looking, but fell into the same 3-0 hole against Kevin Lusson as Cargill before him. With the count at 3-1, Fields walked home the go-ahead run to give the Longhorns a 6-5 lead.

Southern Miss got out of the inning on the next at-bat, but the damage was done.
