Southern Miss had a small meeting on the mound in the second inning with two outs, UNC's Seth Baldwin on first and J.R. Ballinger at a 1-0 count against Ben Bunting.

Whatever was said didn't seem to help.

Ballinger gave up a single to Bunting, advancing Baldwin to second before Dustin Ackley came in to do what he does best: hit.

Ackley doubled to left field for his 24th hit of the College World Series, tying Sam Fuld (Stanford, 2000 to 2003) for the all-time CWS record and driving in Baldwin to put the Heels ahead 2-0.

Ballinger then walked Kyle Seager before Mark Fleury grounded out. The right-handed pitcher has three outs in the first two innings.

Carolina pitcher Adam Warren nearly walked Southern Miss' third batter of the inning, Kameron Brunty, but the Tar Heels made it a 1-2-3 inning with all the balls going to the right side.
