BATON ROUGE, La. -- Although Florida coach Jim McElwain said his offensive scheme will largely remain the same with Treon Harris at quarterback, he acknowledged that Harris' mobility will add to LSU defensive coordinator Kevin Steele's list of concerns for Saturday's matchup of unbeaten teams.
Editor's note: This week we continue to break down each of LSU's position groups as we prepare for the Tigers to open preseason practice in early August. After examining the offensive positions last week, today we focus on the secondary.
BATON ROUGE, La. -- For most LSU fans, there is only one spring storyline that matters: the quarterback battle between Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris. Indeed, the competition between junior Jennings (1,611 passing yards, 11 TDs, 7 INTs in 2014) and sophomore Harris (452 yards, 6 TDs, 2 INTs) might determine whether the Tigers re-emerge as legitimate contenders in the SEC West or remain in the middle of the pack like last season's 8-5 club.
BATON ROUGE, La. -- He's not a native-born Louisianan -- in fact, he's 900 miles from his Illinois home -- but LSU freshman Clifton Garrett said he gets chills when he thinks about his first Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The LSU Tigers lost one the few veterans on its interior defensive line in the first week of preseason camp when Quentin Thomas tore a bicep on Wednesday. LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette confirmed that Thomas had suffered an injury after the fourth-year junior missed practice on Thursday and Friday, but the Baton Rouge Advocate reported that he is expected to miss the season.
Editor's note: This week, we'll take a quick look at each of LSU's position groups as the Tigers prepare to open preseason practice next week. Up next are the tight ends. SAFETY Returning starters: Jalen Mills (67 tackles, four tackles for a loss, three sacks, three interceptions).
Safety already ranked among the most unproven positions on LSU's roster. Jalen Mills' arrest and indefinite suspension on Wednesday only adds to the uncertainty. Mills was arrested early Wednesday and charged with second-degree battery in connection with an incident last month in which he allegedly punched a woman in the mouth at a Baton Rouge apartment complex.
Three things we learned in the spring about the LSU Tigers: 1. QB race is on: If the spring game made anything clear, it's that the quarterback race between Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris was much closer than we might have anticipated prior to spring practice.
