Signing day in their words

No college football coach ever has a bad signing day

When discussing last year's recruiting classes, Colorado's Jon Embree and Purdue's Danny Hope were perhaps the only two honest coaches on the planet.

"I've never heard a coach get up and say he had a bad recruiting class on signing day," Embree said on Feb. 1, 2012. "You've got to take it all with a grain of salt."

Added Hope: "There's an old saying that recruiting is a lot like babies. No one ever says you have an ugly baby, but there's a lot of ugly people in the world. No one ever says they have a bad recruiting class, but there's a lot of bad football teams."

No matter how ugly those classes are, don't expect any coaches to admit anything went bad on national signing day. As I learned last year when I did a similar study, all was good, or better yet, great. Nobody ever loses on signing day.

Unfortunately, the honesty displayed by Embree and Hope didn't translate into enough victories for them last season. Both were relieved of their duties at their respective schools and weren't around for the 2013 edition of signing day.

What they missed was each and every one of their former peers reeling in their greatest recruiting classes ... ever!

No matter how many needs each coach had or what those needs were, every coach from Maine to Maui triumphantly boasted to anyone who would listen about how successfully they filled those needs.

"Everybody gets excited on signing day," Minnesota coach Jerry Kill said last Wednesday. "Everybody's got the best class in America. There's never been a good coach say he didn't have a good class."
