UA All-Americans feeling the draft
Luke Joeckel, Dee Milliner expected to be top 10 picks in NFL draft
The first two Under Armour All-America Games have already produced several NFL draft picks, and the trend will continue in the 2013 NFL draft (April 25, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN). In each of the past two drafts, two Under Armour All-American alums have come off the board in the first 10 picks and this year could be the third with Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel and Alabama CB Dee Milliner projected in that early range.
Fourteen participants from the inaugural Under Armour All-America Game in 2008 have been drafted the past two years, including two of the best young wide receivers in the NFL. The Cincinnati Bengals selected A.J. Green out of Georgia with the fourth overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft and the Atlanta Falcons traded five picks to select Julio Jones out of Alabama two spots later.
Green, who was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and 2012, has established himself as Andy Dalton's go-to receiver and eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark in each of his first two seasons. Jones was a Pro Bowl selection in 2012 after posting career highs with 79 catches for 1,198 yards and a Falcons-leading 10 touchdowns. In the past two seasons, Jones has 27 total receptions for 25 yards or more, a total that ranks him third in the NFL.
Just three years after starring in the premier high school all-star event, two alums of the 2009 Under All-America Game heard their names called early at the 2012 NFL draft. Former Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson was selected with the third overall pick by the Cleveland Browns, who traded up to draft him. Although Richardson was hampered by injuries, he still rushed for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns while hauling in 51 passes. Seven picks later the Buffalo Bills selected cornerback Stephon Gilmore from South Carolina. Gilmore started all 16 games for the Bills, posting 61 tackles and a team-leading 16 pass defenses.
Below, with a little help from Todd McShay, is a look at the projections for Under Armour All-America Game alumni in this year's draft as well as a look at all UA All-Americans who have been drafted.
