Alex Poythress commits to Kentucky
The Kentucky Wildcats have scored a significant commitment in forward Alex Poythress (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast), the No. 17 overall prospect in the ESPNU 100 for the Class of 2012.
Versatile Poythress Fits Kentucky Well

Alex Poythress' versatility is what attracted coach John Calipari to the No. 17 overall prospect in the ESPNU 100. He should excel on the fast break and around the rim with his length, athletic ability and quickness, writes ESPN Recruiting's Reggie Rankin. Blog
With the addition of Poythress, a 6-foot-7 small forward, coach John Calipari has put Kentucky in contention to finish with the nation's top recruiting class for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year.
In addition to Poythress, the Wildcats have commitments from No. 13 overall shooting guard Archie Goodwin (Little Rock, Ark./Sylvan Hills) and No. 32 overall center Willie Cauley (Spearville, Kan./Olathe NW).
Poythress committed after narrowing his choices to Kentucky, Florida, Vanderbilt and Memphis. His recruitment was process-oriented, as he took visits before settling on a decision.
"No. 1, Alex is a very mature person," said Al Cooper, Poythress' coach. "He's thoughtful and bright, analytical and there's a reason why he's a 3.9 student. Everything he does -- class work or scouting reports -- he thinks things out. This process hasn't been a stressor, he's done his homework."
Poythress is projected to bring versatility to Kentucky's lineup.
"He's an extremely gifted athlete that can run like a gazelle," Cooper said. "He has a huge wingspan and the best fit for him was someone who allows him to face the basket and attack."
Poythress averaged 23.5 points and 12 rebounds per game as a junior. He was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in Tennessee last season.
