Ivan Maciuniak, 22, dies after swim
SHAWNEE, Okla. -- A member of Oklahoma Baptist University's national championship swimming team has died.
School president David Whitlock said in a news release that 22-year-old Ivan Maciuniak was swimming at the campus pool Friday when he went under water. He was taken out of the pool and CPR was administered before paramedics and firefighters arrived. He died at a hospital.
Maciuniak started school at OBU in January. The international business major was originally from Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands.
He was a member of the OBU men's 400-meter relay team that brought home the NAIA national championship last weekend.
Whitlock says the medical examiner will determine what caused the student's death.
