ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan coach Brady Hoke said Monday that the school has applied for a medical redshirt for junior quarterback Devin Gardner, and he anticipates it will be granted.

"I would expect that would go through," Hoke said. "The documentation and everything is being sent to the Big Ten."

Gardner played a handful of snaps his freshman season but missed the last two-thirds of it because of a back injury. Michigan did not immediately apply for the redshirt because of what appeared to be a miscommunication over when the redshirt could be applied.

Now, with that cleared up, the Wolverines have filed the paperwork with the Big Ten office. The league has a committee that meets once every two weeks to evaluate the validity and status of medical redshirts.

Gardner started three games at quarterback for Michigan this season and played the majority of the game against Ohio State on Saturday at quarterback. He has completed 57 of 90 passes for 1,005 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions and rushed for seven touchdowns in those four games.

He played the first eight games at wide receiver and had 16 receptions for 266 yards and four touchdowns.
