Did you know: Texas Tech has a new defensive coordinator. Art Kaufman is the fourth different coach to lead the Red Raider defense in the last four years. The three previous coordinators were Ruffin McNeil, James Willis and Chad Glasgow.

Three things to watch

With a new defensive coordinator on the sidelines, Tech has also decided to switch its defensive philosophy. The Red Raiders, who were a 4-2-5 defense in 2011, are now going back to a 4-3 defense, which is the style they ran in 2010.

Texas Tech had a streak of 16 winning seasons before losing five of the last six games last season. How the Red Raiders start this year could go a long way in determining the fate of coach Tommy Tuberville.

Quarterback Seth Doege has all three of his top targets back. The three receivers, Eric Ward, Alex Torres and Darrin Moore accounted for 1,987 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns in 2011.
