Just when Doug Flutie seemed on the verge of another amazing comeback in Miami, the Dolphins defense preserved a wild, wild-card victory. Trace Armstrong forced a Flutie fumble with nine seconds left, preserving the Dolphin win. Flutie had driven the Bills inside Miami's 10-yard line before Buffalo was burned by its fifth turnover of the day. Buffalo's Eric Moulds set a playoff record with 240 yards receiving. The Bills' comeback was also dealt a blow when Andre Reed was ejected for arguing what he thought was a TD catch just before the two-minute warning. 49ers over Packers 30-27 in NFC Wild Card Game (1/3/99) (Young to Owens): Even in the 49ers' storied playoff history, this one deserves a special spot. It took an improbable drive and an amazing catch, but San Francisco finally ended its jinx against Green Bay. Terrell Owens, who had dropped four passes and lost a fumble, held onto a 25-yard touchdown pass from Steve Young with three seconds left, giving the Niners a dramatic 30-27 victory in an NFC wild-card game. Owens' catch capped a 76-yard drive that answered a Brett Favre march that had given the Packers a 27-23 lead. The tough loss meant an end to the Mike Holmgren era in Titletown. Falcons over Vikings 30-27 in OT in NFC Championship Game (1/17/99) (Anderson wins with FG in OT): It took a shocking miss by a flawless kicker and an unlikely drive by a gritty, banged-up quarterback. The result was a stunning upset that sent the Atlanta Falcons to their first Super Bowl. Chris Chandler marched the Falcons 76 yards in the final two minutes of regulation and then led them to the biggest field goal in team history as Atlanta stunned powerful Minnesota 30-27. The amazing turnabout in the NFC Championship Game was made possible when Gary Anderson missed his first field goal of the season -- a 38-yard kick that would have iced it for the Vikings. With more than 11 minutes gone in overtime, Atlanta's Morten Andersen nailed a field goal- ironically, also a 38-yarder to send the Dirty Birds to Miami. Cowboys over Redskins 41-35 in OT (9/12/99): In the history of the Cowboys-Redskins rivalry, give this game four stars and color them blue and silver. Dallas matched its biggest comeback ever, rallying from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Washington 41-35 on Rocket Ismail's 76-yard touchdown catch in overtime. Troy Aikman threw for 362 yards and a career-high 5 TD passes. Washington's Brad Johnson was just as sharp, throwing for 382 yards and two scores. Packers over Vikings 23-20 (9/26/99) (Favre Comeback): Brett Favre led the Green Bay Packers to another thrilling comeback win, hitting Corey Bradford with a 23-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left and giving the Packers a 23-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Bradford's catch capped a 77-yard, 104-second drive led by Favre, who beat the Oakland Raiders in Week 1 with a similar last-ditch march. It was Favre's 12th fourth-quarter comeback and the 15th game-winning drive of his career. Dolphins over Colts 34-31 (10/11/99) (Marino Comeback): Dan Marino redeemed himself. Criticized by coach Jimmy Johnson after a loss to Buffalo, Marino passed for 393 yards and hit Oronde Gadsden on two big passes in the closing minutes as the Miami Dolphins rallied to stun the Indianapolis Colts 34-31. The winning TD came after an apparent sack and fumble by Marino were reversed. After watching a replay, officials ruled Marino's arm was going forward and that it was an incomplete pass, keeping the Miami drive alive at midfield with 1:16 left. | ALSO SEE Poll: NBA Game of the Year Poll: College basketball Game of the Year Poll: College football Game of the Year Poll: Baseball Game of the Year Poll: Game of the Year Poll: Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year | |||||
