Baseball Game of the Year

Our national pasttime did not lack excitement this year and the exciting games were limitless. We've narrowed it down to the top six baseball games, now tell us which one you think is the best.

Check out a description of each game and let us know which you feel is the best. After you vote, you will be sent to the next poll.

Baseball game of the year:

Mets over Yankees 9-8. Mets win it in 9th inning despite six Yankees HR's (7/10/99):
Despite getting out-homered six to one in this wild affair, the Mets pulled out the victory when pinch hitter Matt Franco hit a two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. The Mets trailed on three separate occasions -- 2-0, 6-4, and 8-7 -- but managed to come back and win.

Yankees over Expos 6-0 David Cone perfect game (7/19/99):
For the second year in a row a Yankees pitcher hurled a perfect game. On this day it was David Cone providing the theatrics. In 1998, it was David Wells. Cone had a few close calls, none bigger than in the ninth inning when left fielder Ricky Ledee made a running catch on a sinking liner by Ryan McGuire.

Braves over Astros 5-3 in 12 innings in Game 3 of the NLDS (10/8/99):
Brian Jordan went 3-for-5 and drove in five runs, the last two of which came on a two-run double in the top of the 12th inning propelling the Braves to a 2-1 lead in the series. But Jordan would never have had the opportunity to win the game if it weren't for shortstop Walt Weiss, who made a game-saving diving stop on a grounder up the middle by the Astros' Tony Eusebio in the bottom of the 10th. After stabbing the ball that looked to be a sure hit, Weiss threw off-balance to home plate to get Ken Caminiti to preserve a 3-3 tie.

Red Sox over Indians 12-8 in Game 5 of NLDS and win series 3-2 (10/11/99):
Pedro Martinez didn't start this one due to a pulled muscle in his upper back, but he sure finished it. He entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Red Sox and Indians tied 8-8. While Boston managed to score four more runs the rest of the way, Martinez went on to throw six innings of no-hit ball lifting the Red Sox into the ALCS. In his six innings of work, Martinez allowed only three baserunners to reach, all coming on walks.

Mets over Braves 4-3 in 15-innings in Game 5 of the NLCS (10/17/99):
This was an epic matchup that never seemed like it would end. The Mets scored two run in the first inning and the Braves matched that with two of their own in the fourth. The teams then went scoreless until the 15th when Atlanta scratched across a run. The Mets, however, didn't die, scoring two runs. It actually should have been five but after Robin Ventura smacked the game-winning grand slam his teammates mobbed him on the basepaths and he never was able to come around to score. Forced a Game 6 in the NLCS.

Braves over Mets 10-9 in 11-innings on bases loaded walk and win NLCS 4-2 (10/20/99):
Two nights after the epic thriller, the Mets and Braves staged another one. Atlanta jumped out to a 5-0 lead by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Mets came back though, tying the game at 7-7 on a three-run homer by Mike Piazza in the seventh. The clubs matched single runs in the eighth and 10th innings before the Braves finally won it in the 11th when Kenny Rogers walked in the winning run giving Atlanta the victory and its fifth appearance in the World Series in the 90's.
