Memphis won't grant transfer to Nichols

Junior F Austin Nichols told ESPN 92.9 radio in Memphis he intends to transfer. However, coach Josh Pastner told ESPN's Andy Katz that the school won't release him from his scholarship. "We spoke with Austin in mid-June and everything was fine. We named him captain after the season. We don't know what has changed."

Never been a fan of blocking transfers. Situations don't always work out. But players still should be cognizant of timing.

Andy Katz @ESPNAndyKatz

Memphis' Austin Nichols should give more details why he's transferring in July. Talked to Josh Pastner. He has a right to be upset.

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanESPN

Eventually, Memphis will have to release Austin Nichols. But I do not blame Josh Pastner and administration for being upset right now.

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanESPN

I almost always side with the kids -- but when you ask to transfer in late June/early July, you had better have one heck of a reason.

Arizona commit T.J. Leaf told ESPN he will play for U-18 Israeli National Team later this month. Will attend AAU tourney in Atlanta first.
