Blue Jays pound Rangers, force deciding Game 5

Josh Donaldson and Chris Colabello hit home runs before 40-year-old knuckleballer R.A. Dickey threw his first postseason pitch, and the Toronto Blue Jays forced a deciding Game 5 in the AL Divisi

Jim Caple Senior Writer,

Blue Jays win Game 4 8-4 to force a decisive fifth game. But they also pretty much burned David Price from pitching in Game 5 by bringing him in to relieve RA Dickey who had a commanding 7-1 lead in the fifth inning.

Blue Jays win Game 4, force a 5th game

Kevin Pillar continued his hot streak with 3 hits and 3 RBIs (he has a hit in each game in the series) to give Toronto Game 4. The Rangers and Blue Jays are even at 2 games apiece in the ALDS. Box score

Caple: Blue Jays win, but at what cost?

Despite a big lead and a good start from R.A. Dickey, the Blue Jays surprised many by going to ace David Price to nail down a Game 4 win and send their ALDS back to Toronto.

Price relieves Dickey in 5th inning

Despite the Blue Jays holding a 7-1 lead over the Rangers, they are bringing in David Price in relief of starter R.A. Dickey with 2 outs in the 5th. It is first relief appearance since 2010, although he was a key part of the Rays' bullpen during the 2008 postseason. That move likely means rookie Marcus Stroman would start a decisive Game 5 should Toronto hold on to win. Follow live

Jim Caple Senior Writer,

Gibbons takes out Dickey one out shy of being eligible for win despite 7-1 lead. David Price, who gave up five runs in Game 1, takes over. That probably means Marcus Stroman will start Game 5 -- if Blue Jays hold on.

Blue Jays already up 7-0 on Rangers

The Blue Jays chased Rangers starter Derek Holland in the third, then tacked three more runs after he departed for a 7-0 lead in Game 4 of the ALDS. Kevin Pillar, who homered in the 2nd, added an RBI single in the 3rd. Follow live

Blue Jays chase Holland in 3rd inning

Rangers starter Derek Holland is out in the 3rd inning after giving up a walk to Josh Donaldson and a double to Jose Bautista to open the inning. A run scored after Colby Lewis came in to relieve Holland, and the Blue Jays lead 5-0. Follow live

Blue Jays hit 3 HRs in 2 innings off Holland

Kevin Pillar hit a solo HR in the 2nd to extend the Blue Jays' lead over the Rangers to 4-0 in Game 4 of the ALDS. Derek Holland has now tied a career-high by allowing three HRs in a game. Follow live

Kevin Pillar blasts one to left. It is David Price in the bullpen. Home run puts Toronto up 4-0.

RA Dickey gives up two singles but holds Rangers scoreless in first inning. David Price loosening up in bullpen. Jays lead 2-0.

Jays power way to early lead over Rangers

Josh Donaldson hit a 2-run HR and Chris Colabello hit a solo shot off Derek Holland to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 first-inning lead over the Rangers. Holland had allowed two first-inning HRs all season entering today. Follow live

Blue Jays-Rangers in Game 4 of ALDS

40-year-old R.A. Dickey has 1,714 MLB innings under his belt -- but zero in the postseason. That likely changes today as he tries to keep Toronto in the playoffs vs. Derek Holland, who makes his first postseason start since 2011. Follow live

Jim Caple Senior Writer,

LaTroy Hawkins is one of the best people I've met in three decades covering sports. He is retiring after the season so today could be his last game (or not, if Jays can win). And just as he so often does, he made sure to stop and sign autographs before the game.

Beltre last-minute addition to Rangers lineup

Adrian Beltre, who had not played since the second inning of Game 1 of the ALDS because of a back strain, was in the lineup for the Rangers' 8-4 loss to Toronto in Game 4.

Rangers' lineup change: Beltre in

Texas 3B Adrian Beltre was originally out of the starting lineup for the third straight game, but a new version has Beltre batting third and playing third base. Beltre left Game 1 with a back injury and hadn't played since.

Adrian Beltre just talked his way into the Texas Rangers lineup and will be hitting 3rd

Jim Caple Senior Writer,

John Gibbons says David Price will be available in the bullpen today. Price hasn't pitched in relief since 2010 -- and just once then -- but he did pitch out of bullpen his first year in 2008 postseason and was 1-0 with 1.58 ERA in 5 games.
