Mavs coach Rick Carlisle calls No. 46 pick A.J. Hammons "definitely a first-round talent." The 7-footer averaged 15.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocks as a Purdue senior last season, when Hammons was the Big Ten defensive player of the year. "He fits a void that we have on the roster, and that is a big guy who can score on the block and hit shots out to midrange," Carlisle said. Carlisle acknowledged that questions about Hammons' motor contributed to his slide into the mid-second round.. "Those perceptions probably facilitated him going 46," Carlisle said. "Now it's our job to make sure that he has a long and productive career."
