Jake Spavital named Aggies OC
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M's high-powered offense will have a new playcaller starting with the Chick-fil-A Bowl as Jake Spavital has been promoted, coach Kevin Sumlin announced Wednesday.
Also, secondary coach Marcel Yates is leaving A&M to return to Boise State, where he'll be the Broncos' defensive coordinator under new coach Bryan Harsin.
The 28-year-old Spavital will become offensive coordinator during his first season with the Aggies, where he served as quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator. Sumlin hired Spavital from West Virginia, where he worked under Dana Holgorsen.
Spavital has risen up the ranks quickly since beginning his college coaching career in 2008 at Tulsa under Bill Blankenship and with then-offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. He joined Sumlin's staff as a graduate assistant at Houston in 2009, before following Holgorsen to Oklahoma State and then West Virginia. He has worked with a number of highly productive quarterbacks in the style of offense that Texas A&M uses, including Case Keenum at Houston, Brandon Weeden at Oklahoma State, Geno Smith at West Virginia, and Johnny Manziel this season at Texas A&M.
Clarence McKinney, who served as the offensive coordinator, playcaller and running backs coach this past season for the Aggies, will remain on staff as the running backs coach, according to associate athletic director Alan Cannon.
Spavital will be the Aggies' third offensive coordinator in the Sumlin era, following McKinney and Kliff Kingsbury, who was in the role in 2012 before accepting the head coaching job at Texas Tech. Texas A&M was fourth in offensive yards per game this season (538.2) and sixth in points per game (43.6). Both totals are slightly down from where they were last season, when the Aggies were third in yards per game (558.5) and fourth in points per game (44.5).
Yates was hired by Sumlin prior to the 2012 season after being on the Broncos' defensive staff from 2003-11. Yates, who spent two seasons at Texas A&M coaching the secondary, is a Boise State alumnus who played for the Broncos in the late 1990s.
