"We felt Omar fit the role perfectly, not to mention what a guy with his credentials brings in the clubhouse," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "Hopefully we can work it out to bring him back."
Byrd and Rodriguez are Type B free agents, which means if they sign somewhere else before Dec. 1 or sign elsewhere after the Rangers offer arbitration, Texas would get a compensatory pick between the first and second round of the 2010 draft.
The Rangers have expressed interest in re-signing Vizquel, who served as the backup for shortstop Elvis Andrus and was helpful in the rookie's development. The Rangers are not likely to re-sign Blalock or Jones. The big question will be whether the club can bring Byrd back. That may depend on how much interest Byrd gets on the open market and what budget constraints the club would be under once a new owner is in place.
