Rangers put Cruz (hamstring) on DL

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Texas Rangers have placed outfielder Nelson Cruz on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

The Rangers were hoping Cruz could avoid his second stint on the DL this season. He was injured on Wednesday and appeared as a pinch hitter on Friday against the Minnesota Twins. But manager Ron Washington says the team put him through some tests on Sunday and he did not respond well.

It's a big blow for the Rangers, who have struggled lately without the slugger. Cruz is hitting .327 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs in 34 games this season.

Washington says he is hopeful Cruz will be able to rejoin the team after the minimum 15 days.

Texas recalled outfielder Craig Gentry to take Cruz's place on the roster.
