Sources: Tommy Hanson to Rangers
Hanson gives the Rangers another arm with starting experience that can compete for the final rotation spot, joining a host of internal candidates. The need for additional arms has increased for the Rangers since Derek Holland likely is out until midseason after having surgery on his knee.
Hanson, a 27-year-old right-hander, is looking to bounce back in 2014 and rebuild his value after posting a 4.76 ERA over the past two seasons in 247 2/3 innings pitched. He was traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Los Angeles Angels last year, but after struggling in 2013, Hanson was not tendered a contract by the Angels this offseason.
Prior to the last few seasons, Hanson had a 3.28 ERA from 2009 to 2011 with 431 strikeouts and 148 walks. He threw more than 200 innings in 2010 and made 31 starts in 2012 despite the struggles. He has no health concerns, so he is expected to arrive in Arizona in the next week or so ready to go.
