Yu Darvish: I'm not an All-Star

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers' $60 million Japanese import, right-hander Yu Darvish, said Friday despite being tied for the AL lead in wins (10) and fourth in strikeouts (106), he's not deserving of an All-Star bid.

The AL and NL teams will be announced Sunday, and Rangers manager Ron Washington, in consultation with other big league managers and league officials, will make a call on the rotation.

"But personally do I feel like I'm an All-Star? I don't think so," Darvish said through an interpreter Friday. "I'm also hearing that there's a possibility I might start in an All-Star Game, and to me, that's totally out of context, I think."

The Rangers could have two pitchers on the All-Star team for Washington to pick from. In addition to Darvish, the Rangers could have Matt Harrison, who is looking for his AL-leading 11th win Friday night against the Oakland Athletics.

If Harrison wins, he would tie the New York Mets' R.A. Dickey for the major-league lead in wins, unless Dickey wins his start against the Dodgers on Friday night.

Darvish said it would be unfortunate if he made the team over someone else who was more deserving.

"I think the fact that I'm Japanese, first year over here, the Texas Rangers paid a lot of money for me to come over here," he said. "The fact that I'm an All-Star candidate, it's more of a buildup of who I am and where I came from and the media creating this type (of hype)."

The Rangers have had at least one pitcher in the All-Star Game each of the past two seasons. Alexi Ogando and C.J. Wilson made the team last season, and Neftali Feliz was selected in 2010.
