Los Angeles Angels ace Jered Weaver will miss Friday's start against the Detroit Tigers with shoulder tendonitis, the team announced.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said before Wednesday's series finale at Oakland that Weaver was back in the Los Angeles area to have his arm checked by Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Weaver was struck on the right arm by a line drive from Dustin Ackley's bat in the fifth inning of his loss Sunday at Seattle. He has not thrown since.

Weaver is 16-4 with a 2.86 ERA this season. He also threw a no-hitter against Minnesota on May 2.

In place of Weaver, Ervin Santana will start Friday night and be followed in the rotation by C.J. Wilson and Zack Greinke.

The Angels (74-63) are 2 1/2 games behind Oakland (76-60) and Baltimore (76-60) in the AL wild-card race.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
