Rangers still looking to add power
Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels says his club remains in the market for another bat and that it always will be looking for pitching.
Napoli, whose deal with the Boston Red Sox is still not finalized, hit 24 home runs and drove in 56 runs, while Hamilton had 43 homers and 128 RBIs. The two made up part of that power with the signing of catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who hit 27 home runs last season, but would like to acquire one more bat.
"We're looking at that now," Daniels said Wednesday during a conference call with the media. "There's a decent chance we'll look to add somebody."
Daniels said that could be through trade or free agency.
With the signing of Cody Ross, the Diamondbacks have a surplus of outfielders and could decide to trade one, though it might not be Upton. They also have Jason Kubel, who hit .253 with 30 homers and 90 RBIs last season. The Rangers could look at other hitters on the free-agent market, though that group has thinned since the offseason began.
As for his current outfield, Daniels is prepared to start the season with that group if he can't find any options who make sense.
"We've got [David] Murphy and [Nelson] Cruz on the corners, both of whom we're very comfortable with, and Leonys Martin and Craig Gentry heading an internal group for center field," Daniels said. "We're comfortable. We're always in the market to upgrade or add to the team if we can. But we like our outfielders."
"There have not been many starters out there this winter that we've really pushed on," Daniels said.
"The [Zack] Greinke thing was well documented, and we were interested there, and he got another opportunity and went out west [to the Dodgers]. We feel real good about our first four, and we've got some internal competition for the fifth spot. You can never have enough pitching, so if there's someone we need to add, we will."
Daniels acknowledged it wouldn't have to be someone on a one-year contract, that the Rangers are still willing to consider a multiyear deal for a free-agent pitcher.
