Dampier becomes ill before game

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Dallas Mavericks center Erick Dampier was taken to a hospital in the Detroit area after becoming ill on Sunday.

The team said he was released on Monday, would join the team for the Mavericks' game in Milwaukee and then head back to Dallas. He has been ruled out for Monday's game.

Dampier missed Sunday's game against the Detroit Pistons.

The Mavericks said Dampier became ill before the game, and was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for further tests. He was accompanied by Mavericks trainer Casey Smith. The team never described the nature of his illness.

Coach Rick Carlisle was terse when pressed on the situation, saying, "I've given you all the details I'm going to give you. Symptom free."

Carlisle later called it "a very unusual situation, but he's doing well now."
