The newly acquired Butler took the medication Tuesday and did not participate in the team's morning shootaround Wednesday. He was at the American Airlines Center and hoped to play but decided against it less than two hours before tipoff.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Butler had an allergic reaction but said he couldn't go into further detail. Cuban said it is not an "ongoing issue" and he expects Butler to play Friday night at Atlanta.
Butler's absence somewhat subdued an anticipated matchup between the West-leading Lakers and the Mavericks, who are 4-1 since the trade that sent Josh Howard to Washington for Butler, center Brendan Haywood and Stevenson.
Butler would have probably spent a majority of the game guarding his friend and former teammate, Kobe Bryant. Butler is averaging 14.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in five games with Dallas.
