Dallas Mavericks swingman Vince Carter is out indefinitely after suffering a mild sprain of the left foot, the team announced Thursday night.

No timetable was set for the veteran's return after he was examined by team doctors in Dallas.

Carter sprained his left foot in Monday's 73-70 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers while making a move to his right to get off a game-tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer. He got the shot off, but missed.

Carter said he stepped wrong and heard a "pop." X-rays taken at Staples Center revealed no break.

He was sent back to Dallas on Wednesday and missed games against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday and the Utah Jazz on Thursday. He likely will miss at least Saturday's game at the New Orleans Hornets.

With Carter back in Dallas, backup Rodrigue Beaubois scored a season-high 17 points in the Mavericks' 94-91 victory against the Jazz.
