Tony Romo sticking by Dez Bryant
"The one thing I know is that Dez knows I have his back," Romo told ESPN's Ed Werder on Friday at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe. "Dez knows I'll be there for him. Dez knows that I'm going to stick up for him."
Bryant turned himself in Monday after a warrant was issued for his arrest on allegations that he assaulted his mother, Angela Bryant, during an argument at her home.
The DeSoto, Texas, police department planned to file a Class A misdemeanor family violence charge with the Dallas County district attorney's office Friday, DeSoto captain Ron Smith said.
"None of us are directly involved in what's going on in his life," Romo said. "So everyone, the speculation, the articles and things that are written are just people that are guessing. And they're going to have their opinions based on it but no one knows exactly the way that Dez grew up, the way that things have shaped his life and his difficulties."
According to the incident report, Angela Bryant accused her son of grabbing her by the shirt and hair, hitting her in the face with his cap, striking her repeatedly in the hands and wrists, and pushing her in the chest.
"Stuff happens and we all wish that certain things wouldn't, and I know that he's going to try to make sure in the future those things don't happen again," Romo said. "But friends and your teammates don't leave you during those moments. They come back and they tell you that we're here for you. Our football team is a close-knit team, and these moments should show that."
Bryant, 23, faces up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000. He is also subject to a fine or suspension under the NFL's personal conduct policy, but Romo said he expects Bryant to come back to the team stronger than ever.
"He had a great offseason, he's improved tremendously in the last six months, and he's going to have a good season this year and he's going to continue to develop as a football player," Romo said.
Considered the favorite entering the golf tournament, Romo is tied for fourth after shooting a 73 in the first round.
