DALLAS -- Now isn't the time to rebuild the Dallas Mavericks' roster.

The Mavs made a championship run with a core of unselfish veterans who blended together beautifully. That group deserves the chance to defend its crown.

Money might not allow that to happen. The Mavs have six free agents -- a group headlined by big man Tyson Chandler -- and won't know what kind of financial flexibility they'll have until the new collective bargaining agreement gets done.

"Some checks'll be bigger than others," Jason Terry said, "but we've got to keep this thing intact." Here's a rundown of the Mavs' roster, with the value of each player's remaining contract and one man's opinion on whether they ought to be back in the Big D:

Players

J.J. Barea

Position: PG
Contract: FA
MacMahon: Wants to stay, but might get more minutes and money elsewhere. Take.

Rodrigue Beaubois

Position: G
Contract: 2 yrs., $3.5M (with team option)
MacMahon: The potential is still there, but he's a project in need of a confidence repair. Take.

Corey Brewer

Position: SG/SF
Contract: 2 yrs., $6.3M
MacMahon: Contributed when called upon; should be ready for role to expand. Take.

Caron Butler

Position: SF
Contract: FA
MacMahon: A one-year deal could be in the best interests of both parties. Take.

Brian Cardinal

Position: F
Contract: FA
MacMahon: He's cheap, cheers hard and plays harder when given the chance. Take.

Tyson Chandler

Position: C
Contract: FA
MacMahon: Re-signing the defensive backbone and emotional leader is top offseason priority. Take.

Brendan Haywood

Position: C
Contract: 4 yrs., $34.8M
MacMahon: One of the NBA's best backup big men; insurance policy if Chandler leaves. Take.

Dominique Jones

Position: G
Contract: 3 yrs., $4.8M (with team option)
MacMahon: He basically redshirted as a rookie, but Mavs think he has promise as big point guard. Take.

Jason Kidd

Position: PG
Contract: 1 yr., $8.5M
MacMahon: Played his best ball of second Dallas stint during playoffs. Take.

Ian Mahinmi

Position: C/PF
Contract: 1 yr., $947,907
MacMahon: He's a project who performed well when pushed into Finals Game 6 duty. Take.

Shawn Marion

Position: SF
Contract: 3 yrs., $25.9M
MacMahon: He's Mavs' best wing defender and an efficient complementary player on offense. Take.

Dirk Nowitzki

Position: PF
Contract: 3 yrs., $62.7M
MacMahon: He's got a lot of great years left before his statue goes up outside the AAC. Take.

DeShawn Stevenson

Position: SG
Contract: FA
MacMahon: Rugged defender will probably have to accept minimum salary to stay. Take.

Peja Stojakovic

Position: SF
Contract: FA
MacMahon: He can still shoot it, so he's worth keeping for the minimum. Take.

Jason Terry

Position: SG
Contract: 1 yr., $10.7M
MacMahon: Finals performance earned honor of having jersey retired by franchise. Take.

Management

Mark Cuban

Position: Owner
MacMahon: He's so determined to win that he shut up for a whole month. Take.

Donnie Nelson

Position: GM
MacMahon: Built team that won at least 50 games for 11 straight seasons. Take.

Rick Carlisle

Position: Coach
MacMahon: Jason Terry said it best: "I have a new respect for him." Take.
