DALLAS -- WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia lost his title on the scales Friday afternoon when he failed to make the mandatory 126-pound weight limit.
Garcia weighed 128 pounds at Friday's weigh-in for his scheduled Saturday night title defense against Juan Manuel Lopez, and Garcia decided not to lose the 2 pounds before Saturday night. So with the help of promoter Bob Arum, Garcia gave Lopez a six-figure settlement from his purse to make sure the fight will happen.
Garcia (31-0, 26 knockouts) is not eligible to win back the title in this fight because he failed to make weight. If he wins Saturday night, the title will remain vacant.
Lopez (33-2, 30 KOs), however, is eligible to win the belt. He weighed in at 125 1/4 pounds.
HBO will televise the doubleheader Saturday night from the American Airlines Center.
