World No. 15 Peng Shuai had to withdraw from the Texas Tennis Open before she even took the court Monday.
The top-seeded Shuai was slated to face wild card Melanie Oudin in the first round of the inaugural $220,000 event being held at the Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, Texas, but was forced to bow out because of a left hip injury.
She was replaced by Akgul Amanmuradova, who had to retire with a lower back injury in the third set against Oudin.
The WTA event is the first in Texas in 16 years.
