Westhead to the NBA?

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Congratulations to Paul Westhead, the head coach of the WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury.

Who could forget what this guy did at Loyola-Marymount, as his team believed in run baby run! His team put all kind of points on the board with transition basketball. During that stretch from 1985-90, he led Loyola Marymount to a 105-48 record in five seasons, including three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a berth in the Elite Eight in 1990. His squads were so exciting, with the likes of the late Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble.

Westhead's Mercury were led by a pair of gals from Big East schools, Cappie Poindexter of Rutgers and Diana Taurasi of Connecticut. The Detroit Shock were hampered by the injury to Cheryl Ford, and Bill Laimbeer deserves credit for doing a phenomenal job.

He reigns supreme as the only coach to win both an NBA and WNBA championship. He led the Lakers to the title back in 1980! Now we have to see if Westhead will move on to the NBA as an assistant under P. J. Carlesimo with the Seattle Sonics. Carlesimo has known Westhead for 30 years, and he expressed an interest in bringing the Mercury coach in. Remember, Westhead was an NBA assistant for the Orlando Magic a few years back.

Besides his success at Loyola-Marymount, he has guided collegiate programs at LaSalle and George Mason. His overall collegiate record is 285-223 (.561) in 18 seasons.

I'm talking about a guy who has had a stamp on basketball for so many decades. He coached in the ABA six years ago. he served in a Japanese Pro League.

My friends, he is a flat-out winner. Just look at the resume and now it has a WNBA championship on it! Will he go back to the NBA as Carlesimo's assistant? Stay tuned!
