With Selection Sunday coming up it is time to dish out my major awards for the 2007-08 season.
Let's start with player of the year. It has been a two-man race featuring Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina and Kansas State's Michael Beasley. It has been neck-and-neck and Beasley has had amazing stats as a Diaper Dandy. The bottom line though is that Hansbrough gets the nod because to the victor goes the spoils. Hansbrough is as hard a worker as I have seen in my 29 years at ESPN. He is a force inside and he has truly improved his jump shot.
Beasley gets my Diaper Dandy of the year award. My friends there was plenty of competition. Think about the impact of UCLA's Kevin Love, Indiana's Eric Gordon and Memphis' Derrick Rose. But Beasley shined brightest this year as he shattered Carmelo Anthony's mark for double-doubles by a freshman.
My pick for coach of the year goes to Drake's Keno Davis. The Bulldogs are in the big dance for the first time since 1971. Remember Drake was picked ninth in the MVC preseason poll. The team went on to win the regular season and postseason titles.
There were several viable candidates for the honor. Purdue's Matt Painter and Rick Barnes of Texas were close behind in my book.
There you have it, baby! I have given out the hardware.
Dick Vitale coached the Pistons and the University of Detroit before broadcasting ESPN's first college basketball game in December 1979. Send him a question for possible use on ESPNEWS.
